Take a look at Nathan's story, and learn how an apprenticeship helped with his career in dementia care.
Nathan is a senior carer at Breadstone House Care Centre, a residential facility specialising in dementia care. In his role, he is responsible for:
- Assisting individuals with dementia in their daily activities and personal care
- Supervising a team of carers, offering guidance and support
- Ensuring care services are delivered in line with relevant policies, procedures, and best practices
- Overseeing the training of new staff members and fostering a team environment focused on person-centred care
Nathan values the strong connections he builds with the people he supports. He believes that patience, understanding, strong organisational skills, and effective time management are key qualities needed for success in his role. He takes great pride in knowing that his work makes a meaningful difference in people's lives.
Nathan began his career at Breadstone House Care Centre seven years ago as a care assistant. In this role, he provided personal care, supported social activities, and helped with domestic tasks. While working as a care assistant, he completed his Level 2 Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care (Adult) with the t2 group. Encouraged by his colleagues, he applied for a senior care role and successfully transitioned into the position.
To support his growth in this new role, Nathan pursued a Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker Apprenticeship. This qualification has helped him develop new skills and take on greater responsibilities, enhancing both his confidence and his ability to lead effectively.
Nathan is committed to continuous learning and actively participates in the training opportunities provided by his organisation. He views each day as an opportunity to gain new knowledge and improve his skills.
In the future, Nathan aims to complete his Level 5 Leader in Adult Care Apprenticeship, with the goal of advancing to the role of Care Home Manager.
Nathan highly recommends a career in care, describing it as deeply rewarding. His advice to anyone considering a role in health and social care is to approach the work with patience and a genuine understanding of each individual's needs.
"I love helping people and seeing them smile. The job satisfaction comes from knowing the positive impact I can make on someone's life."
