July is Talk to Us Month — a national campaign led by Samaritans to remind us all how powerful a simple conversation can be. Whether you're supporting others in a care setting, leading a team, or just checking in with a friend, being there to listen can make a life-changing difference.
Let's Talk About It — We all have days when life feels overwhelming. But for many people, the hardest step is simply opening up. That's why talking – and listening – really does matter. You don't need to have all the answers. Just being present and showing you care is often more than enough.
Whether you're struggling to juggle work and study, a colleague feeling under pressure, or a loved one going through a tough time, reaching out could be the moment that helps them feel seen and supported.
Listening well is a skill, but it's one that anyone can develop. Here are a few simple things you can do:
- Be fully present – put away distractions and show that you're engaged
- Don't interrupt or offer solutions too quickly – sometimes, people just need to talk things through
- Use open questions – ask things like "How have you been feeling lately?" or "What’s on your mind?"
- Respect silence – giving someone space to gather their thoughts can be powerful
Being there for others is important but so is looking after yourself. Remember that meaningful conversations help boost your well-being too. Whether it's chatting with a peer on your course, connecting with a colleague, or catching up with family, these moments of connection matter.
And if you need support, don’t be afraid to ask for it. It's okay not to be okay.
Samaritans Awareness Day (24 July) is also known as The Big Listen — a chance for all of us to reflect on how we can better support each other. Why not:
- Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while
- Share a well-being resource with your team or peers
- Wear green to show your support for Samaritans
