Understanding Disability
History Month

What is Disability History Month?

.

Every year, Disability History Month is observed in the UK from November 16 to December 16. This important month raises awareness about the history of disability rights and the ongoing challenges faced by disabled people. It’s a time to recognise the progress made in disability inclusion, celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities, and highlight the work that remains to be done to achieve equality.

Why is Disability History Month Important?

.

Disability History Month emphasises the contributions of disabled people and helps promote a greater understanding of the social and cultural barriers they face. Historically, people with disabilities have often been excluded or discriminated against, with limited access to education, employment, and other opportunities. This month brings attention to these issues and reinforces the importance of equity, access, and respect for all.

Key Historical Moments in Disability Rights

.
  1. 1970s – The Disability Rights Movement The disability rights movement gained momentum, especially in the 1970s, as activists demanded equal access and the right to participate fully in society. The movement led to significant reforms and eventually to laws and policies aimed at protecting the rights of disabled people.
  2. 1995 – The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) In the UK, the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995 was a landmark piece of legislation. It prohibited discrimination against disabled people in various areas, including employment, education, and access to goods and services.
  3. 2010 – The Equality Act The Equality Act brought together previous anti-discrimination laws, including the DDA, and provided further protection for disabled individuals, helping to ensure that workplaces, schools, and public areas become more accessible and inclusive.
